INTRODUCTION
The Catholic
Diocese of Nakuru (CDN) Health Programme has continued to provide
services to the poor and marginalized in the three Districts of
Nakuru, Koibatek and Baringo.
CDN Health Services
are carried through Community Based Health Care Programmes. This
encourages all individuals to participate in matters pertaining
to individual, family and community health.
In all
services delivery points, the CDN works very closely with the Government
of Kenya.
GOAL
To contribute to the improvement
of the quality of life to the communities served through provision
of sustainable health care that is acceptable, affordable and accessible.
OBJECTIVES
-
To educate the community
on the importance of good sanitation, to have access to
safe drinking water and well balanced diet using the locally
available water resources and food respectively.

Educate all communities and
especially the youth on facts and on prevention of STDs and
HIV/AIDS.
-
Increase accessibility to
Community Based Health Care Programme.
-
Provide
HIV/AIDS education information and care especially through Home
Based Care.

TARGET POPULATION
- Children under 5 years old
- Women of child bearing age.
- Youth in and out of school.
- Poor and marginalized communities.
In line
with the Government of Kenya recommendations, the CDN Health Programme
has continued to provide services to all communities.
The CDN units
provide services through mobile clinics in order to reach and serve
the very interior villages.
The CBHC programmes
are strongest components of the health care within the Diocese.

The Following
diseases are the top ten within CDN
- Malaria
- Diseases of the Respiratory System.
- Diarrhoea Diseases
- Intestinal worms
- Urinal Tract Infections
- Pneumonia
- Typhoid Fever
- Sexually Transmitted Infections including
HIV/AIDS.
ACTIVITIES

Visiting
of all Health Units in CDN including mobile clinics to attend
to patients and offer vaccination services to the children.

Training of couples on Natural
Family Planning .

Training of community health
workers on home base care.

Training and monitoring of
Traditional Birth Attendants.

Holding of Health Board Meetings

Giving of Workshops on HIV/AIDS
and STD Prevention.

Conducting School Health
Programmes .
CONSTRAINTS
-
Few trainees
and skilled man power in some units
-
Lack of electricity making
it difficult for laboratory tests in some units.
-
Inadequate finance. Most
of the clients attended are unable to clear the bills for services
rendered.
-
Inadequate funds for procurement
of essential drugs and reagents for health units.
-
Inadequate resources to assist
people living with AIDS especially the orphans.
-
Unreliable transportation
for follow up monitoring and evaluation as well as for mobile
clinics and poor roads.
-
Some of the Health Units
have very poor turnouts due to terrain, insecurity and famine.
FUTURE PLANS
-
To train
more TBAs, CHW and VHCS
-
Train couples on NFP and
continue to provide NFP services.

Continue with School Health
Programmes

Make follow up of the trainees
TBAs, CHWS and VHCs

Renovation of some Health
Units
-
Strengthen the Home Based
Components in order to provide services to more clients.
COLLABORATION AND NET WORKING

Ministry
of Health in provision of vaccines, monitoring of Health Services
and training of TBAs, CHWs and Home Based Care Workers.

Other
Religious bodies e.g. Kijabe Hospital who perform surgical
operations to correct deformities on the disabled.

The communities
we serve have taken ownership of services offered through community
Based Health Care Programmes.
The living standards
of people have improved through the health services rendered to
them.
We still intend
to extend our services to all areas within the CDN so that
we can continue to save life and improve the health standards to
all communities.
