TECHNICAL TRAINING PROGRAM

The Catholic Diocese of Nakuru (CDN) Technical Training
Programme (TTP) is a vocational training and employment promotion
programme.. The TTP focusses on assisting young people recognize
the potential economic contribution of a fully developed Small Scale
and Jua - Kali Enterprise (SSKJE) sector. We work together with
Micro and Small Enterprises ( MSEs) in the CDN region. Our interest
is to develop and promote oriented vocational skills and income
Generating Activities (IGAs) as means of sustainable livelihoods
for the youth and institutions.
Overall Goal :
The overall goal is to enable young people to obtain
self or wage employment in their area of training thus enhancing
self - reliance.
Strategies :
- To strengthen its potential to be national support programme
in the sector of skill training.
- To develop programmes that are people oriented, keeping issue
of gender sensitivity and participation in focus.
- To pursue its role in capacity building of vocational training
institutions personnel through training, information, insemination
and networking.
- To offer appropriate technology solutions for basic needs
of rural communities.
- To work towards promotion of micro enterprises in order to
strengthen rural communities.
- To facilitate marketing of items produced by artisans through
training and linkage with marketing network.

Target Group :
The TTP works closely with vocational training institutions
(VTIs ) to aspire trainees to obtain self or wage employment as
well as those already in businesses.
Young school leavers who do not proceed to the next
stage of education and are interested in vocational training are
our principal target group. Ex-trainees of VTIs operating SSJKE
will also benefit from a range of TTP services
The Benefits
The major benefits of vocational training are to:
- contribute to the economy in terms of output of goods and
services.
- generate informal sector employment opportunities to the youth
within the business at a relatively low cost.
- develop a pool of skilled and semi skilled workers who are
the base for future industrial expansion .
- create demand and supply of goods and services to the communities.
- contribute to increased participation of ingenuous citizens
in the economic activities.
- raise the self-reliance of young people and their statuses
in the society.
TTP Services :
- Enable VTI graduates to be gainfully employed.
- Crease increased urban skill training and placement opportunities
in public and private sector employment.
- Increase rural training opportunities by developing and promoting
labour market oriented programmes.
- Institutional strengthening by enabling VTIs and TTP to be
capable of coordinating and expanded comprehensive vocational
programmes.

- identification of profitable business opportunities.
- Training for business and institutional sustainability.
- Linkage to credit providers

- Linkage to markets
.
- Business Plan preparation
- keeping inventory of VTI graduates through " Tracer Study"
system.
- Developing Industrial Project Profiles for use by SSJKE operators.

Over 12, 000 trainees have graduated through one or
the other of the following courses since 1971:

- Motor Mechanics
- Carpentry / Joinery
- Leather work
- Masonry
- Plumbing
- Tailoring / Dressmaking
- Home Economics
- Secretarial
- Computer Programming
- Fine Art
The TTP promote people oriented vocational skills
and income generating activities as means of sustainable livelihoods
for the youth and institutions.
