Social Communications Programme

Program Coordinator: Mr David Omwoyo

A Brief History

The social communications program of the Catholic diocese of Nakuru dates back to 2002 when the diocese was drawing its five year strategic plan. In the plan, (2003-2008) the Diocese envisaged to establish an effective Social communication organ that would incorporate Information Technology (IT). The Communication office of the diocese was started in February 2002. That same month, the Diocese produced its 1st Issue of a bi-monthly newsletter, titled Mwangaza, Swahili for light. Nakuru diocese also publishes daraja, (Swahili for bridge) an in house monthly news bulletin that serves the networking needs of programs, priests and the religious working in different arms of the diocese.

Two major reasons why the catholic diocese of Nakuru decided to reflect and redefine the role played by mass media in her mission is because the church is marking 40 years of the Inter-Mirifica, or the Second Vatican Council’s Decree on the Media of Social Communications. In that historic document promulgated by Pope Paul VI on December 4, 1963, the church acknowledged that various forms of mass media “can of their very nature reach and influence not only individuals but the very masses and the whole of human society”. Secondly, the church in Africa is marking ten years after the African Synod whose resolutions were launched by Pope John Paul II in 1995. In their resolutions, The Synod fathers named Social Communications as one of the five pillars of the African Church’s evangelization into the new Millennium.

As a first step towards embracing means of social communication as a major way of evangelization, the Catholic Diocese of Nakuru developed a comprehensive policy on Communications and Information Technology. The policy now guides the diocese in implementing all communication projects. The Communications program incorporates the Catholic Bookshop and St Mary’s Printing Press.
