EAST POKOT PROJECT
Administrator : Fr. David Conway, CSSP, BA &
Anthropology
East Pokot is located in Northern parts of Kenya.
It is characterised by harsh weather and rugged terrain. Temperatures
escalate to as high as 420 C while the rains are
erratic and unevenly distributed.
The main inhabitants of the region are Pokots and
the Marakwets. Hardly a year passes without drought in this land.
This has left the area with a very serious food shortage in every
year making the region depend on almost entirely on relief supplies.
Livestock rearing forms the basis of livelihood of
the Pokots and the Marakwet. They live a pastoral way of life and
this forms the backbone of their lives. Land is communally owned.
Agricultural potential is very limited. Overgrazing,
recurrent drought, poverty and inter-tribal raids make the area
extremely vulnerable in this harsh environment.
The project covers the Barbello and Kositei Missions
in Baringo District. It addresses the basic humanitarian needs amongst
the nomadic inhabitants of the region. The overall goal of the project
is to further improve the health situation of the nomadic people
in the East Pokot area.
The specific objectives are : -
-
To immunize the children living in East Pokot
against the following diseases: tuberculosis, diphtheria, pertussis,
tetanus, polio, measles, yellow fever and pneumonia.

of the people.
