JUSTICE AND PEACE COMMISSION

The Catholic Justice & Peace Commission is an integral programme of the Diocese of Nakuru. It derives its mandate and foundation from the Pontifical Justice and Peace Commission (1967). The Commission was incepted in April 1991, three years after the Kenya Episcopal Conference initiated a National Justice and Peace Commission. Guided by CDN's vision of "Endeavouring to be a community of Christian Love where the human person is respected and dignified", CJPC's principles and values are guided by the Catholic social teachings. CJPC has its roots mandate in the bible and the social teachings of the church.

" To promote people's development to take control of their lives, create understanding, respect and protection of their rights through best practice and advocacy in human rights, good governance, conflict resolution and peace building."

  • The overall aim of the project is to promote and uphold human rights within the communities we are working with.
     

Desired Impact

The intended impact of the Human rights programme is to to improve the human rights situation and living conditions of the people of Koibatek, Nakuru and Baringo districts.
 

This will be achieved in the following ways:-

  • Strengthen the capacity of the target groups to demand and defend their rights.
  • Ensure support of HIV / AIDS to the infected and affected persons.

Expected Outcomes

  • Increased awareness and knowledge of human rights.
  • Reduced incidences of domestic violence, cultural and gender based violations.
  • Increased awareness among policy makers and the general public on human rights violations in work places
  • Reduced incidences of discrimination of people living with AIDS Governance Initiative
  • The overall aim of this project is to enhance and support good governance and increase gender sensitive participation within governance structures.

Desired Impact

  • The intended impact of the governance project, is improved good governance and effective participation of men and women in Koibatek, Baringo and Nakuru districts.This will be achieved in the following ways;
  • Ensure the flourishing of democracy by contributing towards making governance structures and institutions that are accountable, accessible and transparent.
  • Contribute to women's participation in all spheres of governance.
  • Strengthen capacities of policymakers and government officials to ensure efficiency.

Expected Outcomes

  • Opening up of processes, structures and contents of key government institutions for public scrutiny.
  • Increased numbers of women participating in leadership and decision making structures within the project area.
  • Increased service delivery by the policy makers and government officials.

  • People made aware of structures and processes of governance
  • Governance structures and processes made accessible to people living in the area.
  • Number of governance institutions providing timely services.
  • Conflict Resolution and Peace Building Initiative
  • The overall aim of the project is to ensure and promote conflict resolution and peace building processes.

Desired Impact

The intended impact of the peace- building programme mechanisms in the project areas is to create a conflict resolution mechanisms and peace building processes in the project areas.

This will be achieved in the following ways

  • Build the capacity of beneficiaries , particularly women to actively participate in conflict resolution and peace building
  • Ensure a peaceful co-existence among the communities

Expected Outcomes

  • Improved understanding of the causes of conflict in the area.
  • increased capacity of beneficiaries to participate in conflict resolution and peace building processes.
  • Reduced incidences of conflict in Koibatek, Nakuru and Baringo Districts
  • Increased interest and capacity of women to participate in conflict resolution and peace building

Outputs

Awareness and understanding of causes of conflicts in the project area raised.

  • Reduced incidences of conflicts and internally displaced persons.
  • Increased capacity of men and women to participate in conflict resolution and peace building built.
  • To be just is to give to each one his or her due. Another way of understanding justice is to think about the dignity of the human person. Justice is present when people are treated according to their God-given dignity.
